Barney & amp; Friends is an American children's television series intended for children ages 1 to 8, made by Sheryl Leach and produced by HIT Entertainment. It aired on PBS on April 6, 1992. The series featured the title character Barney, a purple anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus rex that conveys educational messages through songs and small dance routines with a friendly and optimistic attitude. The production of the new episode originally stopped on September 18, 2009, although reruns of the series are still featured on many PBS stations in subsequent years. Repeat impressions aired for 10 years at Sprout from 2005 to 2015. By 2015, it was announced that the event will be revived. However, nothing else has been announced since then. It is scheduled to premiere in 2017, but has now been pushed back to an unknown date.

Origin and development

Barney was created in 1987 by Sheryl Leach from Dallas, Texas. He came up with an idea for the program while considering TV shows that he felt would educate and also appeal to his son. Leach then unites a team that creates a series of home videos, Barney and the Backyard Gang , starring actress Sandy Duncan in the first three videos.

One day in 1991, the daughter of Connecticut public television executive Larry Rifkin hired one of the videos and was fascinated by it. Rifkin believes the concept is potentially developed for PBS. Rifkin thinks Barney has an appeal because he is not nearly as neurotic as Big Bird. He gave it to CPTV president, Jerry Franklin, whose preschooler also fell in love with him. Franklin and Rifkin gave the idea to all their colleagues with preschoolers, and they all agreed that the kids would love the potential Barney show. Franklin and Rifkin convince Leach to let CPTV change the concept for television. The show debuted as Barney & amp; Friends in 1992. The series was produced by CPTV and Lyrick Studios (later purchased by HIT Entertainment).

Although the show was a runaway hit, PBS initially chose not to provide funding beyond the initial 30-episode. When CPTV executives learn this, they write letters to fellow PBS members who urge them to reconsider the PBS. The Lyons Group, meanwhile, sends a notice through Barney Fan Club, telling parents to write letters and make phone calls to their local PBS stations to show their support for Barney & Friends At the annual meeting of the station members, station executives across the country raised their hands on the prospect of one of their most popular shows being canceled. Faced with an atmosphere which Rifkin later described as "like rebellion", the PBS finally relented.

For several years, the show was filmed at the Color Dynamics Studios facility on Greenville Avenue & amp; Bethany Drive in Allen, Texas, then moved to The Studios at Las Colinas in Irving, Texas, and then Carrollton, a suburb of Dallas. The TV and video series are currently distributed by HIT Entertainment and Universal Studios, while the TV series was produced by WNET from 2006 to 2009. Sheryl Leach left the show in 1998, five years before HIT Entertainment bought Lyrick Studios.

Episode format

Opening the order

The series opens with a theme song (more than a clip of various episodes) and a title card before it goes to school. Children are seen performing activities, sometimes related to episode topics. The kids imagine something and Barney lives off the plush doll, turning into "real" Barney, how she appears to the kids while they're imagining.

The main order

Here, the main flow of this episode occurs. Barney and the children learn about the main topics of this episode, with Baby Bop, B.J, or Riff appearing during episodes and many themed songs related to the subject featured in the series. The roles of Baby Bop, B.J., and Riff have grown larger in the later seasons and then episodes of business out of school to other places in the environment and to other countries around the world in Season 13.

Closing sequence

Barney concludes with "I Love You" before he goes back into his original doll form and winks at the audience. After the children discuss what they have learned, the sequence cuts into Barney Says (in Seasons 1-8 and 12 only) where Barney, who is off-screen, tells what she and her friends have done that day, along with a snapshot of the episode. Then Barney, himself, signed before the credit rolled. In Seasons 3-8, and 12, she then appears on the screen by saying, "And remember, I love you," and waved before the credit rolled.

Criticism

Although some people, including Yale University researchers Dorothy and Jerome Singer, have concluded that the episodes contained a great deal of age-appropriate educational material, calling the program "a model of what should be preschool television", the program has been criticized for lack of educational value, repeated in nature.

Performances and contents are often cited as contributing factors to the "rights" feelings seen in Generation Y who grew up watching the show as children. One specific criticism is:

His shows do not help children in learning to deal with negative feelings and emotions. As one commentator put it, the real danger of Barney is "rejection: the refusal to acknowledge the existence of an unpleasant reality, because along with his uncomplicated diet and unconditional love, Barney offers our children a one-dimensional world where everyone should be happy and everything should be solved immediately. "

The creator and performer of the San Diego Chicken mascot, Ted Giannoulas, calls Barney "a creature that is ubiquitous and uninteresting" in a 1999 court case.

Barney & amp; Friends ranked # 50 in the 2002 TV Guide of 50 worst TV shows of all time. The show is also parodied in various forms. (see Anti-Barney humor)
