Federico Fabian PeÃÂÂ ± a (born March 15, 1947) was an American lawyer who was the Secretary of Transport of the United States from 1993 to 1997 and the US Secretary of Energy from 1997 to 1998, during Bill Clinton's presidency.

Moving to Colorado, where he became a lawyer, Peà ± as elected to the Colorado Representative Council as a Democrat in 1979, where he rose to become a Minority Leader.
In 1983, PeÃÆ'Â ± was defeated William H. McNichols, Jr., a 74-year-old incumbent, to become the first Hispanic mayor in Denver, re-elected in 1987. During his time as mayor in the late 1980s and early 1990s -an, he was instrumental in bringing the Colorado Rockies baseball team to Denver in 1993.
PeÃÆ' Â ± one advised Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton on transportation issues during President Clinton's transition and subsequently Clinton chose PeÃÆ'Â ± a to head the US Department of Transportation. At DOT, PeÃÆ'Â ± leads an organization with 110,000 employees with a budget of $ 37 billion. PeÃÆ'Â ± also negotiated international aviation agreements with 41 countries during his tenure, urging increased freedom for airlines to serve the market. He cut the size of the Department of Transportation by about 11,000 employees. He implemented the first international flight policy for the US since the Carter Administration. This strategy opens the aviation market worldwide, contributing to the revitalization of the aviation industry. He traveled extensively around the world to help US transportation companies access the global market.
In 1995, the Department of Justice conducted a preliminary investigation into granting federal transit agents from a pension management contract to investment management firm PeÃÆ'Â ± a. However, PeÃÆ'Â ± a has severed all relations with the previous company both before the contract and before becoming the Secretary of Transport. On March 17, 1995, Janet Reno ended the investigation.
Although he intended to leave the Clinton cabinet after a period, PeÃÆ'Â ± a also served as Secretary of Energy from 1997 to 1998. During his 18-month term, PeÃÆ'Â ± a led an organization with 16,000 direct employees with a budget of $ 18 billion. He developed the Clinton County Comprehensive National Energy Strategy and oversaw the largest privatization in the history of the US Government - $ 3.654 billion in sales from Elk Hills Oil Field, formerly known as Naval Petroleum Reserve. 1. PeÃÆ' Â ± a Boulevard, a highway in Denver and Aurora that connects Denver International Airport to Interstate 70, is named for him. As mayor of Denver, PeÃÆ' Â ± a led efforts to build the airport. In addition, the Peoples a Great City vision resulted in the revitalization of the Denver economy with a new convention center, a modernized Cherry Creek Shopping Center, an eco-business retail, a library expansion and a performing arts center, and Colorado recruitment of the premier league baseball team Rockies.
PeÃÆ' Â ± a is the father of three children: Nelia, Cristina, and Ryan PeÃÆ' Â ± a. Divorce Federico PeÃÆ'Â ± a and his first wife, Ellen Hart PeÃÆ' Â ± a, became final on September 10, 2001. Federico PeÃÆ' Â ± married Cindy Velasquez on September 2, 2006. Cindy Velasquez is a former broadcasting executive for Channel 7, KMGH-TV, and Channel 9, KUSA-TV, in Denver, Colorado and has a daughter, Pilar.
PeÃÆ' Â ± a is the Chairman of the Joint National Coalition Complete. Today he serves on several corporate boards and is involved in several philanthropic organizations.
On September 7, 2007, PeÃÆ'Â ± announced that he would support Senator Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, and also serve as Chairman of the Obama National Campaign. The move is important in that PeÃÆ'Â ± a does not support Sen. Hillary Clinton, wife of the president under whom she serves. On November 5, 2008, he was appointed advisory board of the Obama-Biden Transition Project.
On October 26, 2011, PeÃÆ'Â ± a was elected to serve as a member of the Wells Fargo Board of Directors. The pen is designated for the University of Denver's Board of Supervisors in June 2015.
