John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is the first solo album by the British musician John Lennon. The album was released in 1970, after Lennon released three experimental albums with Yoko Ono and Live Peace in Toronto 1969 , a live show in Toronto credited to Plastic Ono Band. The album was recorded along with Avant garde Ono's solo debut album, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band , at Ascot Sound Studios and Abbey Road Studios using the same musicians and production team and almost identical cover artwork.

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is generally regarded as one of Lennon's best solo albums, documenting the artistic honesty and artistic integrity of his emotional and mental state at the time in his career. In 1987, Rolling Stone magazine ranked fourth in the "100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Year" list and in 2012, the ranking was number 23 in "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

After the breakup of The Beatles in April 1970, John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono performed primal therapy with the guidance of Arthur Janov for four weeks at his London office before three flew to Los Angeles to continue therapy for four months. Janov therapy techniques emphasize emotionally reviving childhood trauma that is suppressed rather than analytic discussion. In July 1970, Lennon began recording a demo of his song that would appear on John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band , and on one particular day, the 26th, Lennon recorded many demos from his song "God", which including the line "I do not believe in the Beatles". Lennon's therapy was never finished due to the end of his US visa. With the experience he received from therapy, he was able to channel his emotions into the self-revelatory material of an album.

Recording

Lennon and Ono returned from the US on September 24, 1970, to start working on Lennon's album a few days later. Records began at Abbey Road Studios between September 26 and October 27, 1970 using Lennon, Klaus Voormann, and Ringo Starr as core musicians, with Phil Spector and Billy Preston playing piano on the track respectively. The group is jammed with various songs among new recording songs: "When a Child Meets Girl", "It's All Right Mama", "Glad All", "No Sweet", "Do not Be Cruel", "Hound Dog", and " Matchbox ". "Plastic Ono Band" refers to the conceptual band Lennon and Ono had formed in 1969 from various supporting musicians they would use on their various solo albums. Lennon asked Spector, who produced Lennon's "Instant Karma" hit! earlier that year, to participate in producing the album. Spector plays the piano in "Love", but Lennon and Ono produce the album mostly by themselves, since Spector is not available for most of the recording sessions. Spector mixed the album for three days towards the end of October.

Music and lyrics

Lennon's experience in primal therapy greatly affected both the lyrical content of the album, pushing it toward the parent-child relationship theme and psychological suffering, as well as the simple but intense album music style. Throughout the album Lennon touched on many personal issues: his neglect by his parents, in "Mother"; the means by which young people become soldiers, in the "Working Hero"; a reminder that, despite his anger and pain, Lennon still embraces "Love"; and "God", a rejection of the external savior. In the piano-induced "Allah" climax, after listing some unbelieving "idols", including Jesus, Hitler, Elvis, Zimmerman (Bob Dylan), and Beatles, Lennon states that he only believes in himself and Ono.

"See Me" comes from the period of the Beatles, and is built on a fingerpicking guitar pattern very similar to that used by Lennon in "The Honorable Prudence", "Happiness is a Warm Rifle", and "Julia". Donovan claims that he taught Lennon this technique when both were in Rishikesh. The album was released in Japan under the title ????? ( John no Tamashii ) , which is translated as "John's Soul".

Artwork

The cover of Lennon's album is almost identical to the Ono's companion chunk, the subtle difference being that on the cover of Ono, he's lying on Lennon's body. The photo was taken at Lennon Tittenhurst Park estate with Instamatic consumer-grade camera by actor Dan Richter, who also worked as an assistant to Lennons at the time. The initial compact disc issue of this album includes titles and artists, while the remastered version of 2000 returns the original work. In addition, the original LP did not have a playlist on the back cover, which instead showed a photo of Lennon's school in his youth.

Reception and inheritance

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band was received with high critical praise at the time of its release. Critic Greil Marcus commented, "The song of John in the last verse 'Lord' may be the best in all rocks." In early 1971, the album reached number eight in the UK and went to number six in the US, spending eighteen weeks in the Top 100. The album was very successful in the Netherlands, beating the blockbuster George Harrison All Things Must Pass from the top of the chart and remaining at number one for seven consecutive weeks. Robert Christgau named it the best album of 1970 on his year-end list for The Village Voice , and in the final decade list, he was ranked 21st best of the 1970s. In a retrospective review for Rolling Stone, he writes that the lyrics are political, existential, and cautious, while the production of Spector is simple enough that every instrument resonates, including Lennon's voice: "Left out in the open, without harmonies or protective rackets, Lennon's singing takes on an expressive characteristic so anyone looking for this century's vocal appearance would be stupid to ignore. "
