Philostratus of Lemnos (Greek: ?????????????????? span>; c) 190 - c 230 AD), also known as Philostratus the Elder to distinguish it from Philostratus the Younger who also belonged to Lemnos, was a Greek sophist from the Roman Empire period. He may be the nephew of Sophist Philostratus of Athens, and is credited with two books previously attributed to his uncle.

Work

Eikones ( ??????? , Images or Shadows ) as if it were a description of 64 images in the Neapolitan gallery. Goethe, Welcker, Brunn, E. Bertrand and Helbig, among others, argue that the description is actually an existing work of art, while Heyne and Friederichs deny this. In any case they are interesting as showing the way in which ancient artists treated mythologies and other subjects, and written with artistic knowledge and in interesting language. The second series Imagines was produced by his grandson.

Young Philostratus must have written the 2nd series of Eikones and in the introduction, thanking Philostratus the Elder for the 1st series and finally being linked with him in exchange for Philostratus of Athena as mentioned earlier.

Heroicus , or On Heroes , is a popular assault on Trojan War heroes. Written in the form of a conversation between Thracian wine therapists on the beaches of Hellespont and Phoenician merchants who gained knowledge of Protesilaus heroes, Palamedes was exalted at the expense of Odysseus, and Homer's injustice to him was attacked. It has been argued that Philostratus here describes a series of heroic paintings in the palace of Julia Domna.

The work of Heroicus has traditionally been associated with Philostratus of Athens, but is now more often associated with this Philostratus.
