History

The early Europeans in this area were French Canadians; some traded with Sauk and other Native Americans in the area. After defeating France in the Seven Years War, Great Britain seized their territory east of the Mississippi River, including Fort Detroit and surrounding areas. It promotes the development of western Ontario, across the Detroit and St. Clair, after the Revolutionary War.

Royal Oak was not entered as a village until 1891, and as a city in 1921. The name was applied in 1819, during one of Lewis Cass Territorial Governor's survey expeditions. A large oak tree located near the intersection of Crooks, Rochester, and Main is currently reminiscent of Cass of the Royal Oak that King Charles II of England hide to escape captured by the Roundheads after the Battle of Worcester. He named the settlement after that, a few years after the United States fought against the United Kingdom on the northern border of the War of 1812.

the 20th century to present

Royal Oak was developed as a suburb of Detroit in the early 20th century, when Detroit grew rapidly as a result of the rapidly expanding industrialization and automotive industry.

The Royal Oak Farmers market opened as a truck market, on the corner of 4th and Troy, on October 14, 1925 as a joint venture between the new Royal Oak City and Oakland County, Michigan. There are still many farmers in this area. The current structure, on the corner of 11 Mile Street and Troy Street, is adjacent to the 44th District Court. It was founded in the spring of 1927 and dedicates July 1 of that year.

In the 1920s, Father Charles Coughlin, a Canadian Catholic priest who moved to Detroit, became a founding priest of the Little Flower Shrine, now a leading landmark in the city. Through his ministry, he raised funds to build the present limestone complexes and minarets. Initially he broadcast a religious speech from this site. During the 1930s, the broadcast became more political. He initially supported Franklin D. Roosevelt, then opposed him and became more allied with the fascist leaders of Germany and Italy. The Roosevelt government shut down its radio operations after the outbreak of World War II, with support from the Catholic hierarchy. Coughlin has developed a national political influence and has an increasingly anti-semitic message.

Initially downtown has a typical mix of retail and small-scale trading to serve the city of Royal Oak. It lost business to a suburban mall in the postwar period. Since the late 1990s and early 2000s, downtown Royal Oak has evolved as a destination of entertainment and nightlife. A number of condominiums and large loft have been built in the area, increasing the density of the city's inhabitants.
