Plot
At MacLaren's, Ted passed Barney's invitation to watch Robots Versus Wrestlers: Legends because he had to prepare for class. Barney claims he will regret this within 20 years, and Ted is then surprised when the resemblance of Barney and Ted from 20 years in the future appears and tries to convince him. A Ted of 20 hours in the future warns Ted present that he will enjoy the show at the expense of a large drunk and sprained wrist. Present Ted is sure about leaving, but Barney's 20 minutes in the future hold back the group long enough to see a woman enter the bar; the girl in the mantle, whom Ted had not seen in seven years. Ted prepares to talk to him, but is stopped by his future version - the man who is bored with Ted and the version that is so obsessed with him. They told Ted that the relationship was damned, mainly because of the failure of the previous relationship, and Ted let her out of the bar.
Meanwhile, Marshall boasted about the fancy cocktail he'd found named Minnesota Tidal Wave, and tried to order one at the bar. He was surprised when Carl the Bartender called him The Robin Scherbatsky; it was named in his honor because he had ordered it several times. Marshall was upset and challenged Robin to dance, but Lily forbade it. Marshall tries to get back to Robin by writing down his name and phone number in the men's bathroom toilet, but Robin goes in immediately to remove it. He then heads to the women's bathroom, implying that he has written Marshall's number there. Nervously entering the ladies' room, Marshall finally goes in to find a long message by Robin stating the ill-treatment he experienced from his father - but it is a joke to force Marshall to hide in a stall when a woman enters. Marshall tried to leave, scaring the woman from the bathroom and humiliating herself. Lily allows Marshall and Robin to dance.
Ted went back to Barney, who revealed that the whole cocktail story happened five years ago, and Ted sat at the bar alone; his friends are too busy to go to Robots Vs. Wrestler , and Ted is preparing to go to the show itself (resounding "Robot Versus Wrestler", where Barney is angry because he feels the group is growing apart). Ted's future states that if he can revive the events of the night, he will instead visit his apartment, his friends, and most importantly, the mother (who lived a few blocks away at the time). Ted's future imagined him running down the street before knocking on his mother's apartment door. Ted introduces himself, saying how much he loves him, that they will meet in 45 days, and he will give anything to spend extra time with him.
This episode concludes with Ted, Barney, and future versions of themselves singing the acappella version of Billy Joel's "The Longest Time".
