He started using drugs at the age of seventeen, claiming he was an "unconventional child" partly because of his bipolar disorder. Frangipane began living in the basement with a number of his friends, whom he described as "the degenerate stoner," whom he knew through his girlfriend at the time. When describing this period of his life, Halsey stated, "I remember once I had $ 9 in my bank account, and bought four packets of Red Bull and used it to stay up for two or three days, because it's less dangerous not to sleep than to sleep in a random place and may be raped or kidnapped. "

Music becomes a "confessional approach" and a form of therapy. He played many acoustic performances in various cities under various stage names. He chose "Halsey" as his moniker because it is an anagram of his real name as well as a street in Brooklyn where he spends much of his time as a teenager.
