Careers

Starting as a web designer at Black Isle Studios in 1999, he quickly worked up the stairs to an associate designer position and then led the designer at Icewind Dale II. While on the Black Isle he is known for coming up with the naming system of the "Ex-President" project.

In November 2003 Sawyer announced his departure from the Black Isle, where he has served as the lead designer of Fallout 3, to pursue other projects. Interplay went on to close the Black Isle two weeks after Sawyer's departure.

On July 19, 2005, GameSpot reported that he had left Midway's Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, and accepted a position in Obsidian Entertainment, a studio set up and run by many veterans of the Black Isle. His first role was as the main designer for Neverwinter Nights 2 .

He then acted as project director and mainstream designer of Fallout: New Vegas. In December 2011 Sawyer publicly announced mod New Vegas designed for his own personal use by adding many variations of small tweaks to the game ranging from balancing certain character karma to slowing up speed. Until November 2012, this mod has reached version 5.1 released in September 2012.

He also serves as project director and principal designer at Aliens RPG . Sega, the publisher of the planned game, then canceled the project that resulted in layoffs in Obsidian. According to Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart, the game - titled Aliens: Crucible - "looks and feels like it's ready to ship."

In 2012, with Obsidian on the brink of financial disaster after the cancellation of another project by the publisher, Sawyer proposes the company to return to its design roots by making an isometric RPG in a style created on the Black Isle. Arguing there is a market for this type of game among fans, Sawyer suggests switching to the Kickstarter platform to secure funding for development without publishers. He succeeded in persuading the company's chairman, and the game, The Pillars of Immortality, fulfilled Kickstarter's 1.1 million dollar funding goal in 27 hours. It eventually raised nearly four million dollars, setting a Kickstarter record at the time. Sawyer then served as director and designer narrative on his sequel, Pillar of Immortality II: Fire, which was also crowdfunded and released in 2018.
