Histori
2010-2011: X Factor
In 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson auditioned as solo candidates for the seventh series of the British TV singing competition The X Factor. They failed to advance to the "Boys" category at the "jury house" but were put together to form a five-part boyband at Wembley Arena, in London, England, in July 2010, during the "bootcamp" stage of the competition, thus qualifying for the "Group". Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge, and Simon Cowell both claim to have come up with the idea of ââforming a band. In 2013, Cowell said that it took "10 minutes to put them together as a group". Next, the group gathered for two weeks to get to know each other and practice. Styles appear as One Direction. For their qualification song at "jury house", and their first song as a group, One Direction sings an acoustic version of "Torn". Cowell later commented that their performance convinced him that they were "confident, fun, like a group of friends, and also not afraid." In the first four weeks of live performances, they are his last act in the competition. The group quickly gained popularity in the UK.
One Direction reached third place in the competition and soon after the final, their song "Forever Young", to be released if they won The X Factor, leaked to the internet. Shortly after it was confirmed that One Direction had been signed by Cowell to Syco Records worth a reported £ 2 million record deal. The recording for their debut album began in January 2011, when they flew to Los Angeles to work with RedOne, the record producer. A book licensed by One Direction, One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story) , published by HarperCollins in February 2011, then entered the Best Seller list of The Sunday Times . In the same month, boy band and other contestants from the series participated in the Live Tour X Factor. During the tour, the group performed for 500,000 people across the UK. After the tour ended in April 2011, the group continued to work on their debut album. The recording took place in Stockholm, London and Los Angeles, when One Direction worked with producers Carl Falk, Savan Kotecha, Steve Mac, and Rami Yacoub, among others.
2011-2012: Up All Night
Released in September 2011, One Direction's debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful", reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, having become the most widely booked in Sony Music Entertainment in history. The next single, "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing", peaked on the UK's top ten Singles Chart charts. In November 2011, they signed a record deal with Columbia Records in North America. Steve Barnett, co-chairman of Columbia Records, said it was not a difficult decision to sign One Direction; "I just thought there was a void, and maybe they could snatch and hold it." "What Makes You Beautiful" was released in the United States in February 2012, where he debuted on Billboard Hot 100 at number 28, becoming the highest debut for UK acts since 1998. It has sold 4 million copies in US. Upon arrival in the US in February 2012, One Direction made a radio promotion spree, as well as their first North American concert tour as an opening for the Big Time Rush. They made their first US television appearance on The Today Show at Rockefeller Center; an estimated 15,000 fans descend on the square. Critically praised for its appeal to the teen audience, One Direction's first studio album, Up All Night , was released globally in early 2012. It became the UK's best-selling debut album of 2011, and topped the charts in sixteen countries. The album bowed over the Billboard 200 chart, making One Direction the first English group in US chart history to enter at number one with their debut album. They were inducted into Guinness World Records as a result. Up All Night is also the band's first album to sell 500,000 digital copies in the US and, by August 2012, has sold over 3 million copies worldwide.
In April 2012, an American band that used the same name filed a trademark infringement lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, the US band has been using the name since 2009, recording two albums and applying to register a trademark name in the US in February 2011. The US band says they are entitled to triple the profits generated by the British Band, as well as loss compensation more than US $ 1 million. The lawsuit claims that Syco and Sony Music "chose to ignore plaintiffs' rights and deliberately violate them" after they realized in early 2011 that the two bands share the same name. Syco Records was later opposed, showing the US group is trying to make money from the success of One Direction and that boy band is the first to use that name in interstate commerce US. The BBC reported in September 2012 that the UK group won a legal dispute over the right to keep using their band name; The US band changed its name to Uncharted Shores. The name change was announced in a joint statement which also noted both groups were happy with the results.

First The Direction to be licensed in America, Brave to Dream: Live as One Direction , published in the United States in May 2012, occupied The New York Times Best Seller List. In June 2012, Nick Gatfield, chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Music Entertainment UK, expressed how he expects One Direction to represent a $ 100 million business empire by 2013. Gatfield was quoted as saying, "What you might not know about One Direction is they are already representing a $ 50 million business and that is the number we expect to double in the next year. " In August 2012, the group's sales record exceeded 8 million singles, 3 million albums and 1 million DVDs, and they performed "What Makes You Beautiful" at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, representing the handover to Rio de Janeiro as master home of the 2016 Summer Olympics. One Direction is the biggest winner of the MTV Video Music Awards 2012 which won three of their nominations on September 6, 2012, including Best New Artist.
2012-2013: Take Me Home
One Direction's second studio album, Take Me Home , was released in November 2012. Take Me Home was written in groups and has an average of only five songwriters per song. Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk, who composed One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing" hits, spent six months in Stockholm developing songs for albums, and were able to form melodies around their tones. One Direction began recording an album in May 2012, in Stockholm at Kinglet Studios. Artwork album covers showcase the group that surrounds the traditional British K2 red phone box, a familiar sight on the streets of England. Take Me Home compiled mixed reviews from music critics. There is praise for the quality of its production, while it is criticized for its generic and rushed nature. The album's main single, "Live While We Young", released in September 2012, reached the top ten in almost every country that entered and recorded the highest one-week opening sales figures for a song by US non-US artists. Little Things ", both debuting at number one in the UK simultaneously; something that One Direction became the youngest act in the history of English charts to achieve. Arts
The debut studio album One Direction, Up All Night (2011), is dominated by pop music recordings, containing teen pop elements, dance-pop, pop rock, with electropop and rock influences. Digital Spies Robert Copsey describes this album as "a collection of PG pop rocks with a killer chorus", while The New York Times considers it "full of influenced pop rockers, cheerful and sometimes clever." Jason Lipshutz from Billboard acknowledged that the album showed originality in a voice that was "necessary for the revitalization of the boy band movement". The songs "One Thing" and "What Makes You Beautiful" are popular for pop and pop rock genres, for "powerhouse" guitar riffs and "strong" choruses.
Their second studio album, Take Me Home (2012), is characterized by rock-inheriting pop, leading electric guitar riffs, light syntheses, homogeneous sound and messaging, and Auto-Tune tone correction software. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian interpreted his trademark voice as "spirit, synth-supported taking on the early-80s new wave of pop, heavy on truncated rhythm and chugging guitar," which, he says, is at least an improvement on a replacement R & amp; B "which was once very bleak from boyband." Jon Caramanica, writing at The New York Times, considers the album "far more mechanical" than their debut album, although it notes that it is sonic and lyrically similar. The lyrics of this album talk about falling in love, unrequited love, the insistence that deficiency is what makes a person unique, committed, jealous and longs for significant others in the past.
Erica Futterman for Rolling Stone loves their live acoustic performances as both show, "Horan's ability to play guitar, as well as the amazing live One Direction vocals. No need to worry about backing tracks or vagrants take note, a fun realization on pop shows. " Herald Sun ' s Cameron Adams believes that One Direction has a" strong pop sound. "Melody Lau from National Post wrote," It's so easy to get lost in the fascination attached to their stylish hairstyle and style that is almost too paired but somewhere in the midst of all the love-grief. screams of teenage girls are people who can really sing and, to some extent, entertain. "Jane Stevenson from the Canoe portal site agrees:" What I did not really prepare for myself is that they can all really sing together. "Chris Richards, writing at The Washington Post, disagreed with the agreement: "As five traded copies, it's hard to imagine the future of Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin, or Bobby Brown coming out of the pack. No one stands out. "Mike Wass of Idolator feels One Direction" surprisingly made the effort "of Leon Kings" Use Someone "proves that One Direction" is more than capable "to develop their voice.
Their third album Midnight Memories (2013) is a recording of pop rock, slightly away from the original teen band pop sound. Liam Payne calls Midnight Memories as an album that is "a bit cooler and more edgier" than the previous material. The album is heavily influenced by rock and folk 80 and briefly integrates dubstep elements, especially in "Little White Lies". The lyrics theme of this album mainly revolves around love, broken hearts and sexual relationships. Many critics praised the lyrical depth and composition of the music, as well as the degree of group involvement in the production process.
Their fourth album Four (2014) was released on November 17, 2014. Payne once again claimed that the album would be "edgier" and that the group had written most of the songs for it; Horan came up with the name of the album, commemorating the fact that it was the fourth record of One Direction to date and that it had been four years since the band's formation. Signifying further maturation of their pop sounds, the album's first single, Steal My Girl, was dubbed by Billboard as No You Makes You Beautiful, but the Coldplay-like pop piano could be a good direction, and that the band "is not fully ready to release the days of his chewing gum". Rolling Stone describes the note as "saturated with retro vibrations"; his songs "broke the distinction between huge and furious Eighties rock rock and a more elegant Seventies flavor - a very dandy whipper-snapper movement not so far from what Haim hit Days Are Gone did last year."

Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph, in an article on the success of One Direction in North America, notes that Americans have left a gap in the market and it takes Justin Bieber's edge to show that there is still a market for a "clean cut, healthier, whiter-than-white, middle-class pop friendly parent: cute boys support dogs love And what can be better than one cute boy, if not five? " One Direction has been described as sparking a revival in boy band interest, and as part of a new "British Invasion" in the United States. Bill Werde, representative of Billboard magazine, commented, "There are many possibilities here, there are many advantages, the level of talent with such an appearance, it is really a perfect storm for a massive, successful phenomenon big. "
Sonny Takhar, chief executive officer of Syco Records, attributes this breakthrough to the power of social media. "Sometimes you feel that the song is a star, but it's not like that here - that's the way it is," he said. "This is a real moment." Social media has become a new radio, never breaking global action like this before. " Will Bloomfield, group manager, added, "These people are online, and so are their fans." Their management uses social media teams and all members make their own tweets, "which helps create the illusion that they can not get closer to their fans," according to Caspar Llewellyn Smith, writing for The Guardian. One Direction Twitter account has garnered 10 million followers in February 2013, with accounts earning an average followers of 21,000 per day. In the approach pioneered by The Beatles, each member is known for its features; Horan is "cute", Malik is "quiet and mysterious", Payne is "a wise man", Styles is "charming" and Tomlinson is "the funny". The individual identity of each member is reinforced by their distinctly deliberate personal style. Caroline Watson, the band's original stylist, talked about the styling band, "At first I did not want them all black or all in the skin - that stereotypical boyband stuff as a whole." Instead, the original idea was for them to be "men equivalent to Spice Girls", with each member being part of the group but still having its own style. Horan commented on One Direction as a boy band, "People think that boy bands are grabbing air and dressing in one color. We're a boy in a band.We try to do something different than what people would think is a typical boy band type.We try to do different kinds of music and we are just trying to be ourselves instead of shrill. "Leah Collins, writing for the National Post , states that One Direction has succeeded on the front , "For the most part, it just means the group is showing themselves as typical, silly and uncensored teen boys - posting a YouTube jokey video, for example, or boozing at the awards show." Writing for The Observer
