Danny Collins is a 2015 American comedy film written and directed by Dan Fogelman in his feature directing debut. Inspired by the true story of folk singer Steve Tilston, movie stars Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Jennifer Garner, Bobby Cannavale, and Christopher Plummer. The film was released in theaters on March 20, 2015.
For her performance, Pacino was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.

Sinopsis
Aging 1970s rocker Danny Collins (Al Pacino) can not give up his harsh way of life - but then his manager, Frank Grubman (Christopher Plummer), unveiled a letter not sent to 40-year-old John Lennon. After reading the letter, Danny decided to change his way of life. He traveled to New Jersey to try to connect for the first time with his grown son Tom Donnelly (Bobby Cannavale), whom he mated from a casual relationship with a woman who died 10 years earlier. Tom has a wife, Samantha (Jennifer Garner) and seven-year-old daughter, Hope (Giselle Eisenberg).
Looking for a new start, Danny foruring the tour and checking into a Hilton hotel in New Jersey, much to the delight of the young staff. He started wooing the hotel manager, Mary (Annette Bening).
Tom initially refused a father whom he believed left him, but Danny remained, getting Hope, who has ADHD, became an exclusive school for children with special needs. He learned Tom had what the doctor said might be terminal leukemia, inherited from his mother, and began attending doctor visits with him. Tom's dislike for his father gradually gave way to the need for his support.
Inspired by his feelings for Mary and his happiness in having a family, Danny started writing new songs. He booked a one-night show at a small club. When the audience demands that he play his old material, Danny loses his courage and gives a rote performance. Embarrassed, he's back drinking and using drugs, damaging his relationship with Mary and his family. Tom confronted him, causing Danny angrily to reveal Tom's diagnosis of leukemia, something Samantha did not know yet. Tom, feeling betrayed, told Danny not to disturb his family again.
Danny knows from Frank that his finances are in danger, because of all his excessive habits, and that he needs to tour again. Danny goes to the hotel to fix the fence with Mary. Tom is visited by Frank, who tells him that his father, despite many shortcomings, is a good man. Tom then finds Danny waiting in the doctor's office to hear his diagnosis. Danny assures him that everything will be fine, which, after the doctor arrives, seems to be the case.

The story is based on a real-life situation in which John Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote to British folk singer Steve Tilston in 1971 but this remains unknown for 34 years. The actual letter was signed "John Yoko", while the letter in the film was signed "John".
Production
In November 2010, Steve Carell was bound to play the son of a rocker but eventually he broke up due to scheduling conflicts. In June 2011, Al Pacino was in discussion to star in the film. In October 2012, Jeremy Renner was announced as a replacement for Carrell and Julianne Moore also joined the film. Both were eventually replaced; by Bobby Cannavale and Annette Bening, respectively. The filming starts in July 2013 in Los Angeles. The crew was filmed with Al Pacino during a Chicago band concert in Los Angeles.
Reception
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned 78% approval ratings based on 122 reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10. The important consensus of the site reads, "Thanks to Al Pacino's central moving performance - and the excellent work of the supporting cast Danny Collins successfully overcome the more predictable and heavy moments to give a sincere heart the story of redemption. "At Metacritic, the film scored 58 out of 100, based on 31 critics, showing" mixed or average review ".
Entertainment Weekly's Chris Nashawaty named this movie one of the "ignored gems" in 2015.
In addition to Pacino's Golden Globe Award nominations, two of the original films, "Do not Look Down" and "Hey Baby Doll", have long been registered for the 2015 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
