The Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance is an award presented at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony established in 1958 and originally called the Gramophone Awards. According to the 54th Grammy Awards description guide it is designed for solo, duo/group or collaborative (vocal or instrumental) rock recordings and limited to singles or songs only.
This award combines previous categories for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Best Rock Performance by Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The restructuring of these categories is the result of Recording Academy's desire to reduce the list of categories and awards and to eliminate the differences between solo and duo/group performances. The academy argues that the difference between these performances is difficult, because "four-fifths of rock action is a group, and even solo rock actions tend to be supported by the band".
Starting in 2014, this category also includes hard rock performances previously played in Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance categories, which are now inactive.
