" Mother " is a song by the British musician John Lennon, first released on 1970's John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band . The edited version of the song was published as a single in the United States on Apple Records, on December 28, 1970. The single was running about 1:41 shorter than the album due to the lack of a tolling bell intro and a faster fadeout. The B-side displays "Why" by Yoko Ono. The song peaked in the US at number 19 on the Top 100 Money Box and No. 43 on Hot Billboard.

Conception

"Mother" is actually a call for her parents, who left her in her childhood. His father, Alf, left the family when John was a baby. Her mother, Julia, did not live with her son, even though they had a good relationship; he was beaten and killed in a car crash on July 15, 1958 by a drunken cop named Eric Clague, when Lennon was 17 years old. In one of his last concerts, Lennon stated that the song was not just about his parents, but rather "About 99% of parents, alive or half dead".

"Mother" opens the album, starting with the funeral bell tolled slowly, four times. The song ends with Lennon initially singing the sentence "Mama do not go, father goes home" , but then yells as the song fades.

Lennon was inspired to write songs after undergoing primal therapy with Dr. Arthur Janov, originally at their home in Tittenhurst Park and then at Primal Institute, California, where they lived for four months. Lennon, who ultimately scoffs at Janov, initially described the therapy as "something more important to me than the Beatles."

Although Lennon says that "Mother" is a song that "seems to be caught in my head", she has doubts about her commercial appeal and she considers publishing "Love" as a single. "Love" was finally released as a single in 1982.

Early versions of "Mother" performed on Lennon's electric guitar can be heard on the box set of John Lennon Anthology .

Demo version of the song was featured in the last scene and a credits from the 2009 movie Nowhere Boy .
