Biography

For years, Snuffy was an imaginary friend of Big Bird, the only character to see it, but in season 17 (1985) Big Bird showed Snuffy to his friends on Sesame Street so they would believe it. Until then, the adult main character teases Big Bird when he says he has seen it, because they do not believe there are such animals, often despite any contradictory evidence (such as the big bear doll left by Snuffy, or the segment where Snuffy interacts with other characters, like a street scene where Snuffy is seen playing London Bridge with some neighboring children). This is meant to echo the imaginary friends that some small children have.

Snuffy fur in previous years is light brown as it is now, but not exactly the same color; she also has yellow almond-shaped eyes with thin pupils and shorter eyelashes. This appearance is considered frightening for younger children, so his eyes are made round and his personality is friendly.

In the late 1970s, the storyline made the adult characters become increasingly frustrated with Big Bird using Snuffy as a scapegoat whenever something went wrong when they came out of the room. In one episode, the newspaper on Sesame Street contains the front page title, "Snuffy's Got To Go!". Some adults gradually began to trust Big Bird, the first folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie, who sang Big Bird songs about his belief in Snuffy. After Buffy's departure from the show, Linda (Linda Bove), Maria (Sonia Manzano), and Gordon (Roscoe Orman) became believers in Snuffy's existence.

Meet adults

The opening song ends with the premiere of Season 17 of Sesame Street, episode 2096 (first aired November 18, 1985, after the release of Sesame Street Follow That Bird >). Big Bird is disgusted with the adults who do not believe him about Snuffy, so he decides to arrange for them to come to his nest and meet Snuffy as he shouts the sign, "Food!" He chose this word because he knew adults would not believe him if he told them the real reason to invite them to his lair, and "food" was a more reliable bait. When Big Bird calls the word, Snuffy runs away to tell his mother about the meeting, so once again the adults just miss him. Gordon, who wants to help, advises Big Bird that he needs someone to help him keep Snuffy in his nest, and Elmo offers to be his. Snuffy returns, then tells Elmo that he better go home and brush his feathers to prepare for the arrival of an adult, but Elmo holds his snoring so he can not leave. Big Bird shouted, "Food!" and one by one the adults came and saw Snuffy for the first time. They were stunned, then cautiously approached, and Big Bird did the "I told you" routine. Susan (Loretta Long) apologizes on behalf of the group for the unbelieving Big Bird all along. Bob (Bob McGrath) then tells him, "From now on, we'll trust you whenever you tell us something." (Snuffy tells Big Bird they have to get what Bob says in writing.) Linda (Linda Bove) then suggests that Big Bird introduces Snuffy to everyone one by one. All players Sesame Street will next see Snuffy regularly on the show.

In an interview on Still Gaming, Snuffy player Martin P. Robinson revealed that Snuffy was finally introduced to the main cast of humans mainly because of a series of high-profile and sometimes graphic stories of pedophilia and child sexual abuse sister that aired on 60 Minutes . According to Carol-Lynn Parente, the authors felt that by asking adults to refuse to trust Big Bird, they frightened children into thinking that their parents would not trust them if they had been abused and that they would be better off to keep quiet. In the same telethon, during Robinson's explanation, Loretta Long uttered the words "Bronx daycare", a reference to a report on the TV station New York WNBC-TV about alleged sexual abuse at the Bronx daycare center. This is seen in the documentary film Sesame Street Unpaved .

Spelling

According to sources like the Sesame Workshop website and Sesame Street Unpaved, the character names are spelled "Snuffleupagus" (though sometimes hyphenated). Many licensors, closed caption writers, and fans (including websites) misspelled the word. Even The Jim Henson Company website is mistaken, spell the name of the character "Snuffulupagus".

The 1985 Warner Brothers Follow That Bird depicts his name spelled correctly in his mailbox. At that time he was still regarded by others as an "imaginary" friend of Big Bird. The fact that he was shown his own place, as well as sending Big Bird a very real postcard, arranged his disclosure to the rest of Sesame Street by the end of that year.
