In 2012, Imagine Dragons releases Night Visions to critical and commercial success. To promote the album, the band embarked on a one-year concert tour beginning in early 2013 and ending in mid-2014, dubbed the "Night Visions Tour". The tour lasted for more than 170 days, and visited North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania.

Recording

Night Visions Live was recorded during the band's performance at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado on May 16, 2013 from the Night Visions Tour for a year. The venue, which holds just under 9,500 people, has been sold out for the show, which is held for one night only. The event setlist, however, does not reflect the Night Visions Live song list. The event setlist, for example, opens with "Round and Round", the usual opening song during the list arranged on the Night Visions Tour. The show continues with "Amsterdam", "Tiptoe", "Listen Me", "Cha-Ching (Until We Grow Older)", "Rocks", "Radioactive", "Life 30", "Bleeding", "Satan" then cover of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me", then "Underdog" and "On Top of the World" before ending the show with "It's Time", and staged an encore with "Nothing Left to Say", a regular list of closer sets for the tour.

The video, however, follows the setlist in chronological order, but it eliminates the show "Hear Me", "Radioactive", "30 Life", "Exit Bleeding", "Stand By Me", "Above the World" and encore with "Nothing Left to Say ". The show itself lasted under two hours, and has been described by AH Goldstein from the alternate weekly newspaper Denver Westword as "a well-honed large budget stagshow that will match the stadium or every luxury room in Las Vegas original ". The recorded performance became the band's second live album after Live at Independent Records , which was also recorded in Denver, Colorado. The lead singer Dan Reynolds also mainly suffered a broken hand during the show, after breaking it after punching the drum during the May 2013 show, making it, by chance, the second live recording where Reynolds suffered a medical condition; Live at Independent Records was recorded when Reynolds recovered from a throat operation.

The show is one of the many recorded during the Night Visions Tour on audio-visual for potential releases during or after the tour, before the end of the Night Visions release cycle. The recorded performances included the opening night of the Night Visions Tour on December 30, 2012 at The Joint in Las Vegas, Nevada, which was later used for live video "Radioactive" and part of the music video for "Demons", which, in part, combined with 9 performance recordings February 2013 in the same place.
