In 1839, during Poe's lifetime, his collection of strange stories was published, but did not include some of the most respected tales written later, including "The Rue Morgue Assassination" and "A Descent into the MaelstrÃÆ'¶m". Poe's first posthumous collection was compiled in 1850 and included a memoir from Rufus Wilmot Griswold, but this did not confine himself to stories of tension and related stories. Some of Poe's prose and poetry collections followed. The precursor for Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a collection of Poe's Tales of Mystery, Imagination and Humor. The title "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" was first used by "The World's Classics", London, and printed by Grant Richard, 48 Leicester Sq. in 1902. The title of this collection was later adopted by Padraic Colum in 1908 given the growing reputation of Poe's sense of tension, especially in the context of what his French critic M. Brunetiere had said as an "event on the limit" of life. The original collection, in accordance with its title, deliberately overrides Poet, comedy and Poe's essay. In the introduction to the 1908 edition, Colum cites the reason why he adopted this choice: his opinion that the "fairy tale" which is contrary to the "short story" is so short that it tends to lack the description of important social experiences. Colum therefore also left two papers too long, this is the Narration of Arthur Gordon Pym from Nantucket and "The Unrivaled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall".

The 1908 columns of Poe's story collection are published as a book that is specifically aimed at the general public reading by influential publishers Geoffrey Newnes Ltd. using the Book House Library Company, as part of the John O'London House Library.

Further development

The 1908 version of Tales of Mystery and Imagination has been reproduced many times since under the same title by several publishers around the world for over 100 years, and the choice of the Colum story forms the next version of the backbone below same name. Everyman Library generated their own copy of 1908 versions for decades. The title of the 1908 book along with its formula compiled the most puzzling Poe's story into one volume continued to be used by other publishers.

In 1919, George G. Harrap and Co. published an edition illustrated by Harry Clarke in black and white. In 1923, the expanded edition was released with more illustrations, including eight color plates. In 1935, artist Arthur Rackham produced another illustrated version of Tales of Mystery and Imagination.

The Alan Parsons Project's music album titled Tales of Mystery and Imagination uses the same title. It contains tracks based on three of the stories and several others, including poetry, with some narrations by Orson Welles. Parsons also used the title "The Gold Bug" for the song on his Friendly Card album. The title, and Poe himself, is also mentioned in Van Morrison's song "Fair Play" from the album Veedon Fleece.
