Creative troubleshooting is the mental process of finding original and previously unknown solutions to a problem. To be eligible, the solution must be new and achievable independently.

Creative solution type

The creative troubleshooting process usually begins by defining the problem. This can lead to finding a simple non-creative solution, textbook solution, or finding previous solutions developed by other individuals. If the solution found is sufficient, the process can then be abandoned.

Creative solutions will often have different characteristics that include only using existing components, or problematic factors, as the basis for the solution. However, a change of perspective in many ways can help. Solutions can also be considered creative if the available components can be used to solve problems within a short time frame (factors typical for the solution used by the title character in the MacGyver television series).

If creative solutions have broad applications - that is, use that goes beyond original intent -, it can be called an innovative solution, or innovation (some innovations can also be considered inventions).

"All innovations [start] as creative solutions, but not all creative solutions are innovative."

Techniques and tools

Many of the techniques and tools used to create effective solutions to problems are described in creativity techniques and troubleshooting articles.

Creative troubleshooting techniques category

  • Mental state shift and cognitive rearrangement : Changes one's focus from active problem solving and toward creative solutions.
  • Facilitate some ideas : Increase the quantity of fresh ideas based on the belief that a large number of ideas will increase the chances that one of these is valuable. This may include randomly selecting an idea (like choosing a word from a list) and thinking about its resemblance to the situation. In turn, this random action can inspire related ideas that will lead to solutions.
  • Encouraging perspective change : Incorporating new perspectives efficiently can lead to a clear solution. This is very useful for solving very challenging problems. Many of the techniques for this purpose involve the identification of independent dimensions that distinguish closely related concepts. Differentiating concepts help overcome the tendency to use simplified associative thinking, where two related concepts are so closely related that their differences are ignored.
