" The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?) " is a new song and an electronic music viral video by the Norwegian comedy comedian Ylvis. YouTube's top trending video of the year, "The Fox" was posted on video sharing websites on September 3, 2013, and has received over 750 million views in May 2018. "The Fox" culminated over Norway's Single Chart and was very successful at United States, where it peaked at number six on Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks, and before the US release of "Am I Wrong" by Nico & Vinz, the highest-ranking song by Norwegian artists on the charts since the number one song "A-ha" Take on Me "in 1985.

Originally an "anti-hit" was produced as part of a new season of Norwegian TV talk show I kveld med YLVIS ( Night with Ylvis ) and uploaded on YouTube as a teaser, " The Fox "," created for failure ", has become viral, becoming Ylvis's" breakout "song and attracting international attention to the group. In 2013, Ylvis said there were no plans to release an album including a song or sequel.

Production

The brothers Vegard and BÃÆ' Âr ylv YlvisÃÆ'  ¥ ker, member of the Norwegian comedy group Ylvis, produced the song and the music video "The Fox" to promote their upcoming third season I kveld med Ylvis on TVNorge. In an interview with the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten, the brothers declared that the idea of a fox song was originally made in 2012, but was later saved. Half a year later, in 2013, BÃÆ'  ¥ rd and lyricist Christian LÃÆ'¸chstÃÆ'¸er started playing with the idea once again. Vegard was initially skeptical about making a song about the fox, but soon relented. In an interview on the Norwegian-Swedish talk show Skavlan, the brothers mentioned that given the opportunity to collaborate with Stargate, they initially wanted to make dance songs about men who could not dance or were afraid to dance and named it "The Dancing Stick ", but felt that the idea was" too smart ", and that they would seem trying to make a hit. The idea was therefore removed and "The Fox" was produced instead.

BÃÆ'  ¥ rd describes the writing process for "The Fox" in an interview with Billboard in the United States: "The way we work is we just sit around and talk about things and get ideas and record some I think we must have talked about what comes out of the fox, and then we have a chance to work with Stargate, a Norwegian company based in New York City... We really did a favor for them and we asked if they could produce a song for the new season instead ". Tor Erik Hermansen of Stargate recalled in an interview with Spin that the inducement was actually a mockumentary performed by YlvisÃÆ'  ¥ ker brothers to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Eriksen's Mikkel Storleer, where they pretended - pretend to be a Stargate duo. The Australian producer of M4SONIC is also involved in the production.

BÃÆ'  ¥ rd, interviewed by Entertainment Weekly , talked about their intention to make "The Fox":

As comedians, it would not be a good thing if we went to catch a hit in America because they were potentially making something big, so we thought it would be more fun from the comedian's point of view to go home to a talk show. and said, 'Look we've got a chance, we can be great, but the only idea we get for that song is the old idea of what the fox said so we apologize. We're screwed. 'That's the plan... It's funny to talk about on a talk show.

M4SONIC described producing "The Fox":

I'm over in the US with a production duo named Stargate who works with Sia and Nadia Ali. One of the taps that I made we were somewhat put on one side because it did not really happen. I completely forgot about the track until I found the Fox video on YouTube. It turns out that Tor and Mikkel (Stargate), the Norwegian, are friends with BÃÆ'  ¥ rd and Vegard YlvisÃÆ'  ¥ ker (Ylvis). Stargate gave Ylvis a copy of the beats we made to use for the video they did to launch their comedy show in Norway. I think everything is a bit 'snowball' and an accident on their side too. Nobody really thinks it will be a top 10 Billboard track!

Video and music composition

The video was released on September 3, 2013. It is performed in a typical electronic dance pop style, and the lyrics are sung "with the seriousness of deadpan". The video was originally created to promote the new season of talk show Ylvis kveld med Ylvis on TVNorge but after it was released on TVNorge YouTube channel became viral. The video was directed by Ole Martin Hafsmo with cinematography by Magnus FlÃÆ'Â¥ to. The choreography is performed by Thea Bay. The video is produced by Fredrik KvÃÆ'  ¥ le DÃÆ'¸rum and JÃÆ'¸rgen Thue (Concorde TV). The forest scene was filmed in the Nittedal municipality, 22 kilometers (14 miles) from downtown Oslo.

The video begins with BÃÆ'  ¥ rd singing at a costume party in which other participants dress as different animals, whose performances follow the lyrics' development. He gives a summary of animal sounds ("Dog go woof/paint go meow", etc.) that "could have been lifted directly from a preschool primer" and asked "what did the fox say?" The group then transitions into a synchronized dance scene in the forest with BÃÆ'  ¥ rd in Bear costumes and Vegard squirrel costumes (as they failed to find fox costumes at the Norwegian Film Institute the day before filming to replace their melted plastic-painted costumes), complete with face-paint and giant, bushy tail.

During each chorus, the song offers some increasingly unreasonable possibilities for fox sounds like "gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringing!" and in the second chorus where Vegard sings "fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow!" Among the dancers, an elderly man (Bernhard Ramstad) is shown reading the lyrics of a book to a boy sitting on his lap. The song then describes the singer's fox and admiration, and asks if it will communicate with the horse using Morse code. In the end, the singers hovered in the air, constantly wondering what fox sounds, while failing to see the computer animated fox behind them, standing on their hind legs and singing attacks (voiced by Vegard), answering their questions. BÃÆ'  ¥ rd finishes the song with a melancholy faleetto and leaves the fox invisibly.

With C's chord? M - B - F ?, the song is written in the C key? dorian, with the main vocal ranges ranging from C? 3 to F? 5.

Reception and responses

The listener realizes that the song has a structure similar to Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. In Norway, Ylvis's homeland, "The Fox" became the duo's first entry on the VG-lista and eventually topped the charts for four consecutive weeks from September 20 to October 17, 2013. In the US, "The Fox" debuted on September 12 2013 on Billboard Hot 100 at number 29, and at number 3 on the Streaming Songs chart. Ylvis was surprised by the international success of the song, intending to target only their Norwegian audience. Vegard described the song's success as "definitely shocking", while BÃÆ'rk rd said he was "quite surprised" and that it "should have entertained some Norwegians for three minutes - and that's it". Three months after the release of "The Fox", he further commented that "[they] live forever will be defined as before and after the song now". The duo was signed by Warner Music: Vegard has stated that "the record deal has landed before the 'Fox' - in the spring sometimes".

Analysis

Tris McCall of The Star-Ledger describes "The Fox" as "a parody of the excesses and absurdities of contemporary club music": the brothers "take turns singing senseless lyrics of animal voices" above " usually arrogant synthpop ", with the proposed fox sound" imitate [king] car alarm synthesizer from contemporary dubstep ". He compares it to Ylvis' "Someone Like Me" who mocks the insertion of dubstep pause into pop songs. Danielle Seamon from The Lantern admits that while some may be "very confused with the attention of ignorance and bizarren gathering in 2013" featured by the song, it's actually "meant to be funny and almost satirical for pop music" and Ylvis has "pushed everyone's buttons by breaking and manipulating every rule of the Top 40 pop song". Evan Sawdey of PopMatters, who named "The Fox" one of the best songs of the year, called it "a very stupid concept that smart" by bending "pop culture layer in an impressive and ridiculous way" with a simple line of "greatness of the comic".

Caitlin Carter from the online music site Music Times echoed the above comments, adding that "The Fox" became the first song to gain serious recognition "making [staff at the Music Times] wondering", as other duo songs and video before the release of "The Fox" "just as random and melodramatic" as "from reflecting on the meaning of Stonehenge" ('Stonehenge'), to scientifically examine the workings of the female reproductive organs ('Work It'), in honor of the heroes of Human Rights Human United Nations ('Jan Egeland'). Jonathan Ore from CBC News, though calling "The Fox" as "catchy tune [...] paired with the most absurd lyrics of this side of the theme song for DuckTales ", also gave the credit comedy duo to "which is practically better" "Stonehenge".

The brothers commented on the "impossibility" of "The Fox". BÃÆ'  ¥ rd calls the song "stupid thing" and that "although people think it's interesting, it's still a fool fool song, and when people start to forget this, it gets worse, because it's so stupid". In response to the negative feedback of the song, Vegard has made the following statement:

I read one YouTube comment that said: "What's this about? It does not give me any confidence in humanity and the music business." This is a valid point, but many people do not understand that this is the first comedy and second music.

Speaking of the meaning of the song, Vegard characterized it as deriving from "the original wonder of what the fox said, because we do not know". Although interpreted by some commentators as a reference to the hairy fandom, the brothers have stated they have no idea about its existence when producing "The Fox".

Popular culture

Like many viral music videos, "The Fox" has become an Internet meme and has been extensively reviewed and adapted by others, with some of the most prominent being the cover by The Ohio University Marching 110 who previously discussed "Gangnam Style" and LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem "; a cover by Tay Zonday of "Chocolate Rain"; the acoustic guitar cover of the first paragraph by Tyler Ward; adaptation based on the popular video game League of Legends entitled "What Does Teemo Say?"; and an adaptation by Annoying Orange entitled "The Sock". The video was also featured twice by Fine Brothers on their popular series of Elders React and Teens React , which showed the reactions of parents and teenagers to YouTube videos, respectively. A video featuring actor Morgan Freeman who read the lyrics of "The Fox" aloud when interviewed by the online Screen Junkies TV/movie review site has also gained media attention and millions of YouTube views. During an interview with 4Music, in response to many parodies inspired by their song, YlvisÃÆ'  ¥ own brothers have reviewed some of the more popular ones. The song has also been featured substantially in "YouTube Rewind: What Is 2013 Say?", A homage paid by YouTube to the top videos of the year.

This song has been shown several times on television. It's used in ads for the Fox Network that feature FOX program clips and actors who sing the song. On October 28, four contestants in the seventeenth season of Dancing with the Stars performed the song for the "Team Dance" week under the name of the "Foxing Awesome" team, scoring 30 perfectly. NBC's Saturday Night Live cast-member Jay Pharoah and host Kerry Washington appear in a parody video of the song "My Girl" on November 2, 2013, featuring a girlfriend who was arrested by her boyfriend for having sex with another girl. The song has also been performed by Glee in the episode of "Master Puppet" which aired on Thanksgiving Day (November 28, 2013).

Due to the popularity of the song, TMZ reported on October 18, 2013 that two weeks from Halloween, fox dress costume has risen nearly 40% in one of Halloween costume outlets ago, according to data from Spirit Halloween, BuyCostumes and Amazon. The song has also been synchronized with "Halloween house singing" by the environment at Edwards Landing, Leesburg, Virginia, which each Halloween creates an LED light show with hit songs.

This song appears in Just Dance 2015 .

This song is for Leicester City's parody title song "What Does Change Say?" in 442oons video.
