Tulip Fever is a 2017 romantic drama directed by Justin Chadwick and written by Deborah Moggach and Tom Stoppard, adapted from the Moggach novel of the same name. The film stars Alicia Vikander, Dane DeHaan, Jack O'Connell, Zach Galifianakis, Judi Dench, Christoph Waltz, Holliday Grainger, Matthew Morrison, and Cara Delevingne. The plot follows a 17th-century painter in Amsterdam who falls in love with a married woman whose portrait has been commissioned to paint.
Filmed in summer 2014, Tulip Fever was delayed many times before being released in the United States on September 1, 2017 by The Weinstein Company. It grossed $ 8 million worldwide against a $ 25 million budget.

Plot
Set in the Netherlands in the 17th century, during the period of mania tulip, the film tells the story of an artist Jan (Dane DeHaan) who falls in love with a married young woman Sophia (Alicia Vikander) while she is assigned to paint her portrait by her husband Cornelis ( Christoph Waltz). Both are investing in a risky tulip market in the hope of building a future together.
The story begins with a 17 year old Sophia, an orphan, who is betrothed to the old Cornelis. In return for marriage, his sister can travel to New Amsterdam (New York) in a new world, where they have an aunt waiting for them. Sophia is unhappy in marriage, because Cornelis is not romantic and only cares about bringing the heir to inherit his name. Cornelis has his friends show him their children, and there is talk of giving Sophia new bride Sophia six months to get pregnant and giving her the heir. He has suffered from the mistakes he made in the past, with his previous wife: he miscarried their first child and when Cornelis asked the doctor to save the second child over his wife, he felt that God punished him by taking his wife and his son away. Meanwhile, Sophia went to the doctor for a checkup, but the doctor turned out to be Dr. An unethical Sogh, wishing to impregnate Sophia himself. Sophia slapped her and ran away, back to her husband.
Cornelis decides to hire a painter, so she can show off her beautiful young wife to the people. Sophia agrees, but once Jan's young artist arrives to paint the couple, she and Sophia fall in love. Jan sends a message to Sophia, asking her to send her a vase with tulips. She appears at her door with tulips, and they perfect their love.
Meanwhile, Sophia's friend, Maria's housekeeper, had an affair with a neighboring fishmonger, Willem. Willem also speculates in the tulip market, and does it very well - expecting to prosper independently and be able to marry Maria; he even sells his business to other fish sellers. One day, Sophia borrows Mary's cloak and goes to the meeting place with her adulterous lover. Willem, saw Sophia in the cloak, blamed her for Mary, and followed her to her meeting place. Destroyed by what he thought was the unfaithfulness of Mary, he went to the pub to drown his suffering. There a prostitute robs him of the large amount he wakes up in the tulip flower market. When he tried to take the money, he was beaten and forced into the navy for causing a commotion.
Jan plans to escape into a new world - with Sophia, if possible - having succeeded alone in the market of tulip speculation. He heard that the nuns in St. Ursula (the derived Sophia monastery) raises the tulips in their garden. Jan tried to steal some bulbs, but was removed by abbess St. Ursula. When he realized, he apologized and the abbot gave him a lamp that Willem bought before he was thrown into the navy.
Mary realizes she is pregnant by Willem, who is dangerous to her; with Willem gone, the baby would be born out of wedlock. Sophia conspires with Mary: she will pretend to be pregnant, and when her baby is born, Sophia will pretend to die during childbirth, so she can go with Jan, and Mary will stay with her baby to raise her own.
When Maria finally gave birth to a daughter and Sophia pretended to be dead, Cornelis was saddened by her loss of his wife. Sophia, under her cafè pretending to be dead, wept when she understood that Cornelis cared about her. When he was carried away in a coffin, he regretted what he had done. When he returns home, he sees Cornelis lovingly holding the baby, and feels that it may be too late to make things right. He escapes back to the monastery where he grew up.
Jan has one last deal that will give her enough money to let her and Sophia leave town and also pay off all her creditors. He commissioned his fool from a friend of Gerrit by completing this transaction, asking him not to get drunk all the way. Gerrit completes the transaction and then gets drunk. In the next hearing he ate the cargo he was carrying. When he tells Jan and Jan's creditors how he eats "onions," they all know they've been crushed. The tulip bubble has burst. Jan goes to look for Sophia, but finds her bright blue silk robe on the river, which she throws away while fleeing back to the monastery. He thinks he has thrown himself into the canal as a result of the falling tulip market.
Willem, returning after his navy, went to see Mary at Cornelis's house. Maria was very angry with her when she explained that she was in Africa, but they resolved their misunderstandings and reconciliation. Cornelis, in the next room, overhears their loud arguments and the unfolding of the conspiracy. He made peace with the truth, and left for the Indies, but only after first leaving home to Mary, Willem, and the baby girl he loved as his own.
About eight years later, Jan has nothing but a painting of her boyfriend, Sophia. Convent of St. Ursula praised her for her talent, and gave her the job of repainting the mural in the church. When Jan arrives at the monastery, she sees Sophia as a nun and is happy and smiling. The movie ends with Mary's waiter and her husband, fishmonger, Willem, having dinner with their children. The golden rays of the sun shone on the once gray house, and it all ended happily.

Production
The film was originally planned to be made in 2004 with a budget of $ 48 million, with Jude Law, Keira Knightley and Jim Broadbent as lead actors, John Madden as director and Steven Spielberg producing through DreamWorks. However, production was halted a few days before scheduled to begin filming as a result of changes to tax rules affecting film production in the UK.
On July 8, 2013, Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye reported that Justin Chadwick would direct the film with Alicia Vikander attached to Sophia's role and that Matthias Schoenaerts was being sought for the male lead. Bamigboye reported that Chadwick along with producers Alison Owen and Harvey Weinstein, decided to cast Vikander for the film.
In 2014, Alison Owen partnered with Weinstein to restart the film after regaining the rights to the film from Paramount Pictures. In October 2013, Dane DeHaan is in talks to join the cast. In February 2014, Christoph Waltz joined the cast. In April 2014, Holliday Grainger, Cara Delevingne, and Jack O'Connell joined the cast. In June 2014, Judi Dench served as leader of St. Ursula, who takes orphaned children. That same month, Tom Hollander, Cressida Bonas, and David Harewood joined the cast. In August 2014, Matthew Morrison joined. Deborah Moggach, the novelist, also appeared in the film. Harvey Weinstein offered Harry Styles the role of Mattheus, but the singer rejected him for scheduling the conflict, and Matthew Morrison instead was thrown.

Filming
Filming took place at Cobham Hall in Cobham, Kent, Norwich Cathedral, Holkham (in Norfolk), Tilbury, (in Essex), Kentwell Hall (in Suffolk) and at Pinewood Studios on various dates throughout June and July of 2014. taking place in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire.
Release
The recording of the film was screened in May 2015 at the 68th Cannes Film Festival. In December 2015, the first images of the film featuring Alicia Vikander and Christoph Waltz were released. The film was originally scheduled to be released in November 2015, but was pushed back to July 15, 2016 and then postponed again until February 24, 2017. It was later withdrawn from the schedule, and then moved to August 25, 2017. On August 16, 2017, delayed, this time pushed back a week to 1 September. The film premiered on August 13, 2017, at Soho House London.

Writing for Rolling Stone, Peter Travers gave the movie 1 star out of 4, saying, "Tulip Fever", who was shot in 2014 but only hit theater now after years, retooling and release-date reshuffling, should be allowed to die on the vine... The movie just sits there on the screen like a wilting flower with anything to nourish it. "
