Literary Exhibition

The exhibition of 'exhibit' Broodthaers Litté © in the Wide White Space Gallery, Antwerp, December 1969 consisted of a copy of MallarmÃÆ' 'opened book so, (because almost always when a book was put into the exhibit) only two pages that looks. The meaning is there but it can not be fully achieved. 'A series of metal plates, made of anodised aluminum, engraved with a black impression standing for the text, hung on the wall while Broodthaers recording read the poem was played continuously during the duration of the exhibition.

The word is "there", more "real", because it's three dimensions, than the original page but, of course, negative and unreadable. Meanwhile, the recording voice of the artist read the poem repeatedly, "there" but not simultaneously and constantly present like the words of poetry.

This book

After a brief introduction to the original edition published in 1914 by Librairie Gallimard, the book begins with all poems written as square blocks of text if Mallarme's type of poetry is 'plain' and italic if the type of Mallarme is italic. 12 double spreads follow, with a neat black form standing for the text. This work is gentle and feels quite substantial. The cover is an almost perfect facsimile from the original cover, but with the word 'image' replacing 'poetry' in the center of the design.

This edition was published in Antwerp to coincide with the exhibition on November 25, 1969. 10 copies of unattached works, numbered IX, printed onto 12 aluminum sheets - are available, together with 90 copies printed on translucent paper and 300 copies in general. The translucent edition comes with two white card pieces that are cut to the size of the book so that each page can be isolated by the readers if they wish.

Reception book

This book, like the works of Broodthaers in general, has grown gradually since his death in 1976, and has found its way into a number of important collections, including MOMA, V & amp; A, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerpen. It has also inspired another rework, like this one by Michalis Pichler: "In Michalis Pichlers' 2008 reworked blocks were cut, creating negative spaces and geometric patterns of cutting and absence. (...) Remake and version ideas, using works others that exist as a departure point, eliminating the artist from the responsibility of originality while allowing new movements to stand as a new movement.Not originality, anti-expressive - this is a more recent term than the first generation conceptualization. "
