Leigh Daniel Avidan (born March 14, 1979), known professionally as Dan Avidan and with his stage name Danny Sexbang , is an American musician, Internet personality, singer-songwriter, comedian, and actor. She is half of the musical comedy duo Ninja Sex Party with Brian Wecht, as well as a co-host of Mari Bermain webseries Grumps Game with Arin Hanson. He is also part of the comedy trio of video games based on Starbomb music, along with Wecht and Hanson.

Avidan was born and raised in Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey, the elder of two children from Debra Schwartz and Avigdor Avidan. His father was born and raised in Israel, and served in the Yom Kippur War before immigrating to America where he met his mother Avidan. His sister, Dana Avidan Cohn, is a bench jeweler, executive-style correspondent for InStyle magazine, and PopSugar's executive style director. Her maternal grandfather, Bernard Schwartz, helped create a body electrode.

After graduating from Jonathan Dayton High School in 1997, Avidan pursued an ad at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. After dropping out due to no interest in the course, Avidan enters a student exchange program, attending Tufts University satellite campus in Talloires, France to study botany.

Careers

2003-08: The Northern Hues and Skyhill

In response to the Craigslist ad in late 2003, Avidan joined the indie rock band The Northern Hues, a Philadelphia-based group created in early 2002, comprising Aron Brand, Jeff Rains, Alex Yaker, Justin Earley, and Ian Creech. Avidan plays the lead singer and songwriter, and gives most of the band's lyrics while living in northern New Jersey. They released one self-titled EP and one live song recorded in early 2005, at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. In mid 2005, the band split up; Avidan connects the separation by spending "years in [a band] that go everywhere due to lack of planning and focus."

In the winter of 2006, Avidan teamed up with Peter Lennox to form a Brooklyn-based alternative pop duo named Skyhill. Once again, Avidan acted as lead singer and songwriter, and the group released a full album, Run With The Hunted , on May 16, 2007. They toured in New York in early 2008, because of creative differences. On October 7, 2015, Avidan and Lennox returned to release the single <<> Firefly , which was recognized for the band's "maturity in lyrics and sounds" on their previous albums.

2009-2012: Ninja Sex Party Formation

In 2008, Avidan began learning storytelling and improvisation at the Upright Residents Brigade Theater in New York, under the guidance of Margot Leitman, and has conceptualized the possibility of a new musical project. Needing a producer, Avidan was introduced to Brian Wecht, another music director of the entourage, by friends at the theater in early 2009.

Avidan had already chosen the name "Ninja Sex Party," after "three favorite things of everyone," and worked with Wecht to create characters to represent the band. They eventually settled with "Danny Sexbang" as the character of Avidan, and "Ninja Brian" as Wecht. The first duo gained popularity by appearing as music guest at the improvised comedy show Leitman Stripped Stories . Inspired by The Lonely Island and Flight of the Conchords, the band tells the story of "a Jewish hero wearing unitard, with his ninja companions, and together they sing a song about the penis, and try to hit the unsuccessful woman."

The group has released several studio albums and singles, many of which have been mapped on Billboard . By 2018, they have released three studio albums, two cover albums, and produced a fourth studio album called Cool Patrol .

The band also appeared in various film festivals, including SXSW, Dragon Con, and LACS.

2013-present: Game Grumps , Starbombs, and Good Games

By mid-2013, Jon Jafari left his position as co-host of Mari Play webseries Game Grumps . Arin Hanson, co-creator Grumps , brought Avidan to replace Jafari as co-host, after being introduced to the content of Ninja Sex Party by fellow animator Ross O'Donovan. Avidan will also join O'Donovan as co-host of the Game Grumps spin-off game Steam Train , where both hosts play PC games, as opposed to console games. Avidan remained a part-time co-host from the show ever since, despite being absent. In addition to this, Avidan has acted as a co-host of other events from the Game Grumps platform, including Grumpcade , Flip Desks , and Steam Rolled , and provide a narrative for Hunting Monsters .

In late 2013, Avidan teamed up with Wecht and Hanson to create a side band project called Starbomb, with Avidan as the lead singer-songwriter. The band wrote a parody song about video games, unifying provocative sexual music styles from the Avidan Ninja Sex Party and the humor of Hanson-based video games. By 2018, the group has released two albums, both of which have been placed on various Billboard charts.

In 2015, the Internet personality of Jesse Cox and Michele Morrow began to develop an untitled comedy webseri starring Grumps Game for YouTube Red, casting Avidan in the lead role as Alex Taylor's eSports trainer. After Dan Harmon joined as an executive producer in 2016, the project gained media traction, and was officially announced in VidCon 2017 under the title of Good Game. Six serial episodes uploaded to the YouTube channel Grumps Game , with the first episode being free-to-view, and concurrent episodes that require a YouTube Red subscription. Avidan's performance was well received by critics, referred to as "really fun, credible," and "[shining] the light of the potential of other projects."

More collaborations

In 2009, Avidan made and sang the theme song for the children's television series Power Rangers RPM with producer William J. Sullivan. However, because the tone of the event plot clashed with the Avidan demo, the song was canceled.

In 2012, Avidan briefly partnered with Mondo Media to host a comedy sketch miniseries written by Lena Dunham titled Dirty Shorts , in which Avidan described her exaggerated version, similar to Danny Sexbang. The series is not well received, and removed after the first 12 episodes of the season. Avidan commented that the Mondo Media staff experience welcomed him, although he was not sure that the way his character was written would appeal to the audience. Avidan also creates, writes, and provides voice acting for a short-lived animated comedy miniseries in DJ's studio at PJs . Avidan returns to Mondo in September 2013 to write "Dick Figures: The Movie: The Song" for Dick Figures soundtrack: The Movie with the Ninja Sex Party.

Avidan has appeared on various YouTube webseries as guests, including Did You Know Gaming? , a dedicated webseries for video game trivia, Good Mythical Morning , a variety show hosted by Rhett and Link, and Nacho Punch , a sketch comedy website.

On August 3, 2015, Avidan performed with Steel Panther at their House of Blues venue, singing "Party All Day." Both have collaborated on various occasions, with Steel Panther making a cameo in the Ninja Sex Party's "Road Trip" music video, and providing vocals for "6969."

Avidan is a co-creator and co-hosted the football-centric podcast Balls In Your Ear , along with Josh Sprague.

Avidan, along with co-creator Kyle Carrozza, performed the theme song for the Cartoon Network series Mighty Magiswords . Avidan also cast the voice of Dan in the second episode of the second season, "Changeable Terraingable". According to Carrozza, Avidan takes on character is his father's impression.

In September 2017, Night Runner band released an album called Thunderbird , featuring Avidan in the fourth song, called "Magnum Bullet".
