Steven Robert Dahl (born November 20, 1954 in Pasadena, California) is an American radio and humorist. He is the owner and operator of Steve Dahl Network, a subscription-based podcast network and host of The Steve Dahl Show airing a working day at WLS-AM.

Initially, Dahl broadcasted with Detroit WABX and WWWW stations and then with Chicago WCKG, WDAI, WLUP, WMVP and WLS stations. He also served as a columnist for the Chicago Tribune in their Live section as an "advisory representative" of the population until November 2010. In addition, Dahl has worked at the Supervisory Board at Columbia College Chicago.

The radio show Dahl takes a "everyone" approach to life in Chicago and Dahl often tells rural stories about his life and his family in the air. Dahl is also famous in Chicago for the parody of the song and his impressions. He is considered a pioneer in radio talk and has been influential for many other radio personalities. He gained national attention after the promotion of Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park, and he was also known in Chicago for his long role as half of the "Steve and Garry" team (with Garry Meier).

In addition to his radio career, Dahl is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His band, Teenage Radiation, recorded and performed a number of parody songs (which he often played throughout the 1980s) and since 1990 he has been featured and recorded as Steve Dahl and Dahlfins. Dahl also tried acting, appearing in the 1984 cult classic, Grandview, USA. with John and Joan Cusack. Radio career

Initial radio career

In grade 9, Dahl began wandering around a local underground radio station, KPCC-FM, in his native California. At the age of sixteen, after he began working on a full-time radio station, he unofficially dropped out of school. Dahl then explained, "I convinced my parents and school that I would do self-employment studies, I never did." At the age of eighteen, he obtained his GED and married a woman he met briefly after he called him on-air to request a Suzanne , a song by Leonard Cohen who told a story about a troubled relationship. Dahl then explains his short marriage by commenting, "I should have paid more attention to the song."

Dahl was told by radio executives that he never made it on the radio because his voice was too high. At one point, Dahl was so desperate that he stopped for about six months and tried to pursue a career as a recording engineer. However, it's never been anything other than making a mix tape of popular songs to play on an airplane. During this period, he tried to make peace with his ex-wife, who at the time was dating the program director at the Los Angeles radio station where he worked. He then confessed to stalking him by sleeping on Subaru outside his home.

In 1976, Dahl's ex-wife told of the opening for a morning show in Detroit, Michigan at WABX-FM. He managed to secure the job, despite the fact that he did not think he was good enough for it (he later learned that the station was owned by the same company as his ex-wife worked). At WABX, Dahl learns as much as possible about what constitutes "good radio" and also begins experimenting with his content. Its popularity increased to the point that it reached a market share of 7.2.

During his time at WABX, Dahl was introduced to Janet, an English language teacher and a junior high school drama in the suburbs of Detroit, who casually dated his friends and also his audience. The two hit it off after Dahl invited him to the "hump day" broadcast he did from the camel area of the Detroit Zoo.

The WDAI executive in Chicago, interested in a 7.1 Dahl share, approached him and offered to double his salary to $ 50,000 per year. However, Janet does not want to leave her family in Detroit and she does not want to leave her. This prompted Dahl to ask his boss for $ 35,000 a year to live in Detroit. They flatly refused by telling him to "Go on your own.Go to Chicago. Fall on your fat face." In 1978, after Janet received his marriage proposal, Dahl left Detroit for WDAI in Chicago. The couple eventually married in 1980.

Rude Awakening

Dahl started at WDAI Chicago on February 23, 1978 with a solo performance of "Steve Dahl's Rude Awakening", but never achieved a solid ranking despite media attention. Ten months later, on Christmas Eve, 1978, WDAI changed the format from rock to disco and shot Dahl.

In March 1979, after several months without a job, Dahl was hired to perform a morning show at WLUP where he met the night of DJ Garry Meier (later broadcast under the pseudonym "Matthew Meier"). Shortly thereafter, the two initiated a cross talk which eventually led to Meier working with Dahl as both sidekick and journalist. Dahl effectively forces Meier to use his real name by calling him "Garry" accidentally in the air. After publicly discussing the subject, once again, the broadcast, Meier officially removed his pseudonym.

Disco Demolition Night

Responding to the Dahl shooting from WDAI, Dahl and Meier mocked and stacked scorn on disco and WDAI notes (calling it "Disco-D.I.E." Mocking station slogan, "Disco-D.A.I.") In the air. Dahl even recorded and started playing Rod Stewart's parody of "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?", Which he called "Do You Think I'm Disco?". The song successfully broke the national charts to reach the peak at # 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received airplay throughout the country.

During the same time period, Dahl and Meier, along with Mike Veeck (son of Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck), Jeff Schwartz of WLUP Sales and Dave Logan, WLUP Promotion Director, came up with a radio promotion and tie-in to the White Sox called Disco Demolition Night which took place on Thursday, July 12, 1979. The concept was to create an event to "end the disco once and forever" in the middle of Comiskey Park field that night by allowing people to get tickets at the box office if they bring $ 0.98 (for 97.9 WLUP locations on the dial) and at least one disco note. Over 50,000 fans showed up, records collected, stacked on the ground and detonated. Hundreds of rowdy fans stormed the grounds, refusing to leave, and causing the second match of the doubleheader to be postponed. American League president Lee MacPhail later declared the second game of a doubleheader fake victory for the visiting Detroit Tigers. Six people reported minor injuries, and thirty-nine were arrested for disorderly behavior.

Elevation of collaboration

As a result of Disco Demolition Night, Dahl achieved national recognition and his popularity increased significantly. He founded the syndicate and Steve & amp; Garry began airing in Detroit and Milwaukee, where the show went well. However, in February 1981, WLUP dismissed Dahl, citing "continued attacks on community standards". "It happened in El Paso and Los Angeles, like, on Monday, and on Friday they fired me," Dahl said later. Meier was offered the opportunity to continue his own show, but he refused.

During the Iranian Hostage Crisis, Dahl, along with his support band "Teenage Radiation", recorded and released a parody of The Knack's "My Sharona", called "Ayatollah". He also made an on-the-air prank call to "Islamic Fried Chicken", ordering a chicken bucket for the hostages at the US embassy, which was then scolded by the State Department. Dahl also parodies the killing of John Wayne Gacy with his song "Kid Kid in the Crawl" (for Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall"). The playback was stopped after the parents of the murdered children were called to complain.

Dahl and Meier won a local Emmy award for a special television they performed in 1981 called, Greetings from Graceland , which is a comedy joke in a tourist temple and featuring "Uncle Vester" Elvis Presley who sells Elvis cookbooks from the guardhouse. They held a morning television show, called It's Too Early at a local Chicago station, WFBN-TV, whose national syndicated columnist named Bob Greene is called "the best program on television", "amazing" and " hypnotized "in his column June 20, 1983. The show was canceled after four weeks in the air because it was considered" unsuitable for public viewing... especially for children "after Dahl was shown to be fully clothed sitting on a toilet seat reading a newspaper.

In 1982, he stated in the air that motorcyclists allegedly could replace Necco Wafer for coins at auto toll gates on the Chicago highway. The Illinois Tollway System later said that about a dozen toll engines were damaged due to people trying to use sweets to pay tolls.

Dahl decided to do a vasectomy in March 1989, which was carried out directly in the air at the urologist's office in Indiana. According to Arbitron ratings for the survey period, Dahl and Meier's ranking jumped from a tie for seventh place in the afternoon to a series for third place.

According to Paul D. Colford, formerly the writer of Long Island Newsday, Howard Stern listened to a recording of Steve and Garry sent from Chicago by a friend of chief engineer at WCCC Hartford. Colford claims Stern has finally developed its broadcasting style as a result of this recording. Later, Stern was employed at WWWW Detroit (which Dahl left behind when he moved to Chicago).

End of collaboration

Steve & amp; Garry moved to the WLS, but eventually returned to the WLUP where they stayed until they split up in 1993. The alleged reason for the breakup was Dahl on-the-air comments about Meier's new wife, commercial real estate broker Cynthia Fircak, while the new couple are on their honeymoon. Meier also blames Dahl alcoholism and unexpected behavior. Dahl, for his part, blames Fircak for disunity, once saying in the air "When I meet him, I know the rules have just changed."

In 2003, Robert Feder, a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, said: "This is a continuing divorce: A decade after Steve Dahl and Garry Meier cut off their legendary radio connections, their separation remains a source of bitterness and anger for them - and a constant appeal to their fans. "

After the team broke up, Dahl went to the Sports Talk WMVP AM and teamed up with Chicago sportscaster Bruce Wolf.

WCKG year

Dahl ends up at WCKG, broadcasting an afternoon show at the station. He eventually teamed up with Buzz Kilman, who was Dahl's newsman starting in 1980 at WLUP, and the show was available as a podcast on Dahl's website and broadcast live on the WCKG website. Dahl's afternoon show was rated fifth (4.1) among men 25-54 in the 2006-2007 winter ranking report. In 2007, Dahl was named one of the '100 Talk Talks Most Important Host' by Talkers Magazine .

On Friday, August 18, 2006, Dahl was broadcasting long distances from his show at Oak Street Beachstro, a restaurant in Oak Street Beach, Chicago. Incidentally, Garry Meier was having lunch there with friends. After Dahl learned of Meier's presence there, he invited Meier to appear in the air with him, accepted by Meier. Meier ended up staying for the rest of the show. The show was covered extensively throughout Chicago media that night.

On April 2, 2007, Meier returned to Chicago radio, performing an 8 AM-11 AM show at WCKG. She appeared briefly on Dahl's show on the same day. They sometimes contribute to their respective performances, and Meier spent the first half hour in the studio during Dahl's show on the 28th anniversary of Disco Demolition Night, recounting the events of the night.

Jack FM

Dahl announced on October 29, 2007 that he would move to the morning in WJMK on November 5, 2007 because WCKG changed the format. He is the only personality that lives at Jack FM outlets because the entire station is programmed and run by a computer. Dahl's son, Matt is part of the regular WCKG composition and hosts the show soon after his father's event. However, changing the WCKG format, from FM talk stations to adult contemporary stations means the end of Matt's show at WCKG.

On December 5, 2008, Dahl announced the end of his show at Jack FM due to low ratings.

"They say, 'Well, do a few weeks, farewell.'" Dahl said. "I said, 'This is not a farewell. You take me out of the air I will not retire.' "I still have two and a half years left of my deal, so, to be honest, I do not let them out of it." Dahl also said he was ready to air for the rest of his contract, which ended in mid-2011 and is said to be worth more than $ 1 million per year.

After the end of Dahl's final broadcast, Howard Cogan, a normally sarcastic signature voice, Jack, who was heard on many FM Jack stations, delivered a genuine submission to Dahl followed by "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh, an old friend of Dahl.

Return to WLS

On October 7, 2014, media blogger Robert Feder reported that Dahl would return to terrestrial radio at WLS AM 890. Feder wrote: "Dahl, 59, will join the news/talks station at Cumulus Media as an afternoon personality, from 2 am to 6 pm Monday even though Friday. If all goes according to plan, Dahl will start in early November. Sources familiar with the deal said Dahl will continue his business podcast subscription, with Cumulus Media becoming a partner at Steve Dahl Network.According to the agreement, Cumulus will provide financial support, technical and marketing, while Dahl will continue to run a 90-minute daily podcast for its paid subscribers. "Dahl confirmed Feder's report on Oct. 8 saying" he wants to get back on the air to be 'part of everyday conversation in Chicago'.

Dahl's first day back at WLS is November 3, 2014. His performances included appearances by Ron Magers and a phone interview with Bob Odenkirk. Before the show, Dahl said in an email, "My plan for the show was funny and got a good rating." Dahl also said that he saw his return as not only a good opportunity to try and revive the radio, but also as a way to turn people into his podcasts.

Podcasts

On September 8th, 2009, Dahl started podcasting daily from a studio in his basement. At the time, Dahl was still under contract with CBS, who had agreed in July 2009 to partner with him to produce daily podcasts, long hours complete with multiple ads. On August 1, 2011, Dahl, no longer under contract with CBS, started the Steve Dahl Network whose 11 unique weekly events can be downloaded or streamed through official websites and apps or downloaded from iTunes. Initially, there was only a daily podcast from Dahl; The network, however, has expanded and now includes podcasts by friends Kevin Matthews and Daniel Van Kirk among others.

Personal life

Currently, Dahl lives in the western suburbs of Chicago with his wife Janet, a non-practicing lawyer, whom he married in 1978. Before law school, he taught junior high school for seven years in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Dahl has three sons and nine grandchildren.

Dahl is a Chicago sports fan, and has season tickets for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Dahl has been fighting against alcoholism throughout his adult life, which has been alluded to many times. He has been drunk since 1995, a day after the drink bout at the White Sox house opener, reaching it's cold turkey.

It was kind of driven by the fact that I realized that Patrick (the eldest of his three sons) was 14 years old and I quickly approached the 'Do as I say, not as I do' situation. I do not think I have the right to comment on [my child's] behavior based on my behavior. Plus, once I turned 40 (in November 1994) some metabolic things happened to me and I thought I was old.

In 1999, his wife filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Mancow Muller for the obscene comments Muller made about him on his show. In 2001, the case was resolved. Although the terms of the deal were not disclosed, it was reported seven points.

Also in 1999, Steve Dahl confessed secretly recording conversations among the staff at WCKG because he suspected they were talking about him behind his back. In the piece Dahl has played on an afternoon show, two station employees can be heard mocking him as "Steve Dull" and mocking his show. Dahl said, "I'm doing it inside my organization to confirm my suspicions. This is in a studio full of microphones and cameras, legally, I do not feel they expect privacy in that case."

Drew Peterson's criminal suspect and his lawyer, Joel Brodsky, were summoned to the Dahl show on January 23, 2008. Dahl has been railing against Peterson from the start of the former famous police officer. Brodsky suggested that Dahl host an on-air "dating match" with Peterson the next day, but the WJMK and Dahl managers then decided against it. "
