VanderWaal was born near Kansas City, Kansas, to Tina and David VanderWaal, who lived in Lenexa at the time. David is of Dutch origin and works as vice president of marketing at LG Electronics. VanderWaal moved to Suffern, New York, where he lived with his parents and older sister; he also has an older brother.
