Nelson is an American rock band founded by singer/songwriter Matthew and Gunnar Nelson (twin sons Ricky Nelson and Kristin Nelson). The band achieved success during the early 1990s with their debut platinum album After the Rain , featuring the number one hit "(Can not Live Without Your) Love and Affection".
After the success of their first album, the band claimed to have encountered conflicts with their record label, lack of media support, and shifting music to grunge and alternative rock. They eventually split with Geffen Records in 1995. Nevertheless, the band continued to produce and release albums independently under their own label, Stone Canyon Records.
Matthew and Gunnar also performed under the name Ricky Nelson Remembered, in tribute to their father. They are listed on the Guinness Book of World Records as the only family to reach record-breaking status in three consecutive generations (starting with Ozzie and Harriet Nelson's grandparents).

Tahun-tahun awal
Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, twin sons Ricky Nelson and Kristin Nelson, were involved in music from an early age. In an interview, Gunnar once said that he and Matthew have been writing songs since they were six years old.
During the 1980s, Matthew and Gunnar played as Agent Odd and as The Nelsons, with which they played in the Los Angeles club. A year after their father's death in a plane crash, Lorne Michaels agreed to ask the Nelson family as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live, at the request of their manager at the time. They became the first unsigned band to play on the show. During the iteration of the band, Matthew is the vocalist and bassist, while Gunnar plays the drums. When they return home from the show, Gunnar claims he has what he calls "Epiphany", which he shares with his brother. She tells him that they have to decide on a band like that and start sharing the front stage together. Gunnar promised to learn to play the guitar and do it in a year.
When the band tried to win a record deal, they settled with Geffen Records and began to approach the executives of A & amp; R John Kalodner. According to Gunnar, they meet with Kalodner "every month for a year", where he filters the songs they bring until they have enough for an album. During this time, they were also introduced to Marc Tanner, who helped them polish their songwriting skills.
During this time, Nelson was also approached to donate a song for the movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Matthew and Gunnar then co-wrote the song with Dweezil Zappa called "Two Heads Better than One". As the band is in the process of joining Geffen, Kalodner advises them not to use their name for the song, so they are billed as a Power Tool instead. The song eventually became the movie theme song.
Record agreement and success with After Rain
After a year of meeting with Kalodner without being signed, Matthew and Gunnar meet him, fight their manager's wishes, and play an acoustic version of "(Can not Live Without You) Love and Compassion." Kalodner was impressed and the band was signed the next day.
As the Nelson family prepares to enter the studio, they begin to assemble a band. They met drummer Bobby Rock at the MTV Music Awards, while he was with Vinnie Vincent Invasion, and kept in touch. After the band broke up, Nelson asked him to join their band. Joey Cathcart has been playing guitar with the brothers in high school so they decided to approach him. They were introduced to guitarist Brett Garsed by their manager in Australia. Finally, they contacted Paul Mirkovich, who had worked with them during a demo session for the album.
The band is full to the studio where they work with Marc Tanner. According to the Nelson Family, John Kalodner "basically let us do our own thing". After Rain was released on June 26, 1990 and became an instant success. The album eventually sold over 3,000,000 copies, eventually certified double platinum by the RIAA. As a result, the band embarked on a World Tour with more than 300 concerts. Their first single, "(Can not Live Without Your) Love and Affection" peaked at # 1 on Billboard Hot 100. Their other tracks "After the Rain", "More Than Ever", and "Only Time will Tell" peak at # 6, # 14, and # 28 respectively.
Struggle with Geffen and Imaginator
After several years of touring, the band went into the studio to record their follow-up. The result of this is a darker and more difficult album concept titled Imaginator . According to Gunnar "it's about the machine is the media. The same machine that built us and is also very ready to destroy us." According to the band, producer John Kalodner was not involved with the recording process because he was "too busy taking note of Aerosmith". When they presented the album to executives at Geffen Records, they were unhappy and gave the band the option of producing and recording another album, more in line with what they expected, or they would be expelled from their contract.
Gunnar said that they left "frustrated and helpless", but decided to return to the studio. They started working on a more acoustic-oriented album, which, according to Gunnar, "180 degrees in the opposite direction from Imaginator ". The result was the album Because They Can , which was finally released in 1995, five years after their first album. Kalodner left Geffen a week before the album's release, and the label decided to give a limited promotional album.
Shortly after, Geffen frees Nelson from their contract. Gunnar referred to this as "one of the best days of my life." A year after his release, Nelson finally releases Imaginator independently. The band considered the album as a representation of their direct sound at that time.
Independent releases
The band then set up their own record label, Stone Canyon Records. During this time, the band was also involved with Victor Japan to license their album there. In 1997, they released their first Japanese album under their label, titled Silence is Broken . The Nelson family think of it as a "trial" and "transition" album.
In 1998, Matthew and Gunnar began compiling a demo collection with the aim of entering into a joint venture deal in Nashville. The result became a country album called Brother Harmony , where they were billed as The Nelsons. The following year, they released Life in Japan, in partnership with JVC Victor. Gunnar has referred to this album in an interview as "not taking prisoners of pop/rock albums".
Matthew and Gunnar follow this with a tribute album for their father, Ricky Nelson. The album titled Like Father, Like Sons , was released in 2000, as well as their 2010 album, "Lightning Strikes Twice."
Next year
In 2010, Nelson reached a record deal with Frontiers Records. They released three albums almost in sequence. The first, Before the Rain , is a collection of some of the remaining demo songs from the After the Rain album. The second is Perfect Storm , which is a live recording compilation of the After the Rain world tour. This is important because, despite the enormous world tour covering nearly 300 dates worldwide, there are no official recordings made. The third album is a new studio album called Lightning Strikes Twice , featuring new material from the band. This is the band's first original studio album since Life was released in 1999.
The release of three albums in 2010 coincided with the band's official anniversary. For that, they organize a 20th Anniversary Tour in several countries. Singer/guitarist Mark Slaughter joins Nelson for a tour, which starts at Firefest in Nottingham, England, England.
In addition to the tour as Nelson, the twin singer-songwriters also perform separate tribute acts for their father, called Ricky Nelson Remembered. In addition, they performed with celebrity rock band all-star Scrap Metal.
