Pentatonix is an acappella American group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola and Matt Sallee vocalists. Avi Kaplan was formerly a member of the group; he was replaced by Sallee in 2017. Characterized by their pop style settings with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion and beatboxing, they are widely known for its cover, mostly from modern pop works or Christmas carols, sometimes in the form of medley, with original material. The Pentatonix began with Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (born May 16, 1992), Mitchell "Mitch" Grassi (born July 24, 1992), and Scott Hoying (born September 17, 1991) who grew up together and schoolmates at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. For local radio show competitions to meet Glee players, they set up and sent a trio version of "Telephone". While in USC, Scott Hoying joined a cappella group called SoCal VoCals. He knows about The Sing-Off from other members of the group, Ben Bram (also arranger, producer, and sound engineer), and is encouraged to audition for the show. He persuaded Maldonado and Grassi to join him, but Bram suggested to have the bass and beatboxer as well to support the group. Through a friend, Hoying met Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (born April 17, 1989), a well-known vocal bass in the cappella community. The Pentatonix, as suggested by Scott Hoying, is named on a pentatonic scale, scale or musical mode with five tones per octave, representing five group members. Scott Hoying and Kirstie Maldonado left college hoping to win The Sing-Off while Mitch Grassi missed her high school graduation to audition for the show. After they won, all the members moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a recording artist. The main purpose of this group is to become the first major acappella group this time.

In January 2012, after signing a contract with Sony Pictures's label, Madison Gate Records, the group began working on their first album with producer Ben Bram. Philanthropy

During The Sing-Off Pentatonix visited the administrative office of The Trevor Project, an American non-profit organization founded in 1998 and a leading national organization focused on suicide prevention among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender , and questioned (LGBTQ) youth. The group members shared their experiences dealing with bullying and noting public service announcements.
